If you’re thinking about resurfacing your driveway, here’s something I’ve learnt after years working with concrete on the Gold Coast and across SE QLD — timing is everything.
We get a lot of people asking when the “best time” is to book in their resurfacing job or tackle it themselves, and honestly, it can make or break the result. With our mix of scorching summers, sudden storms, and dry spells, understanding the weather is just as important as the prep work.
Autumn & Spring: The Sweet Spot
In my experience, the absolute best times to resurface are autumn and spring. These seasons give you:
- Dry, stable weather
- Milder daytime temperatures
- Less risk of storms interrupting the job
It’s not just about convenience — it’s about getting the right cure, the right bond, and a finish that holds up for years, not just months.
What Happens in Storm Season?
Look, I get it — summer’s when you’ve got the holidays and a bit more time up your sleeve. But if you resurface during the wet season, you’re rolling the dice.
Here’s what we’ve seen go wrong:
- Rain hitting freshly poured surfaces — ruins them instantly
- High humidity trapping moisture underneath — leads to bubbling and peeling
- Slabs heating up to 30°C+ — makes resurfacing products dry too fast and crack
Even if the surface looks dry, the humidity can still affect how well your new layer sticks. And trust me, having to redo a job because of a storm rolling in is no fun for anyone.
The Ideal Curing Temperature
For a strong bond and smooth finish, you want 15–25°C during the day. That’s the Goldilocks zone — not too hot, not too cold. Outside that range, especially in summer heat, the product doesn’t behave properly.
If it dries too fast, it can shrink and crack. Too slow? It won’t set at all. That’s why we always keep an eye on the forecast before locking in a job.
Spraycrete Needs Dry Conditions
If you’re using spraycrete (which we do a lot of), the surface has to be completely dry — and it needs to stay that way for at least 24 hours after application.
Any moisture trapped in or under the surface can mess with the bond and shorten the life of your finish. So, if there’s even a chance of rain, we reschedule. Simple as that.
My Advice? Plan Around the Seasons
I always tell customers: don’t plan your resurfacing job around a long weekend — plan it around the weather. Autumn and spring give us the most reliable windows to get it done properly.
You’ll get:
- A more durable, professional finish
- Fewer weather delays
- Better bang for your buck
Plus, if you get in early (especially autumn), you’ll beat the rush. We tend to get booked out quickly once that dry spell hits.
